About Bridgewater

Bridgewater is a township of about 45,000 people in Somerset County, central New Jersey, wrapped around the small boroughs of Somerville and Raritan. Crossed by the Raritan River and its North and South branches, it mixes suburban neighborhoods, corporate campuses and wooded hills of the Watchung range.

The township played a real part in the American Revolution. During the winters of 1777 and 1778-79, George Washington's army camped in the Middlebrook area, and colonial homes such as the Van Horne House and the Van Veghten House sheltered Continental officers. The Washington Camp Ground still honors the encampment on the slopes above the valley.

Today visitors come for minor league baseball at TD Bank Ballpark, riverside walks in Duke Island Park and trails, reservoir views and rock outcrops in Washington Valley Park. The large Sri Venkateswara Temple draws worshippers and visitors from across the region, and Bridgewater Commons is a major shopping stop. Downtown Somerville, Duke Farms and the Sourland Mountain area are a short drive away.

Best seasonApril to October for baseball, parks and fall color along the Raritan River.
Ideal stayOne day, or a weekend combined with Somerville and nearby Somerset County towns.
ArrivingInterstates 78 and 287 meet here; NJ Transit Raritan Valley Line trains stop at Bridgewater, and Newark Airport is about 40 minutes east.
