About Edison

Edison is a township of about 105,000 people in Middlesex County, New Jersey, about 30 miles southwest of New York City. It is named for Thomas Edison, who built his famous laboratory at Menlo Park here in 1876 and invented the phonograph and a practical light bulb, earning the nickname the Wizard of Menlo Park.

The Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park preserves the laboratory site, topped by the Edison Memorial Tower with a giant light bulb, and a small museum tells the story of his work. Roosevelt Park, one of the county's oldest parks, has a lake, gardens and an amphitheater for summer concerts.

Edison has one of the largest Indian American communities in the country, and Oak Tree Road is lined with Indian and South Asian restaurants, sweet shops, jewelers and sari stores. Korean restaurants and markets add to the food scene, Menlo Park Mall offers shopping, and the beaches of the Jersey Shore and New York City are each about an hour away.

Best seasonMay to October for park concerts, food crawls and Diwali celebrations in the fall.
Ideal stayHalf a day for the Edison Center and Oak Tree Road.
ArrivingNewark Liberty International Airport is about 20 miles northeast, and NJ Transit trains stop at Edison and Metropark.
