Greeley is a city of about 110,000 people on the plains of northern Colorado, about an hour north of Denver, with views of the Rocky Mountains to the west. It was founded in 1870 as the Union Colony, a planned farming community backed by New York newspaper editor Horace Greeley, famous for the advice to go west, young man. Irrigation turned the dry prairie into rich farmland that still surrounds the city.
Downtown Greeley has been revived with restaurants, breweries and the 9th Street Plaza, where summer concerts and festivals fill the streets, and the Union Colony Civic Center hosts touring shows and performances. The University of Northern Colorado's historic campus adds music, theater and a youthful feel.
Every summer the Greeley Stampede brings one of the country's biggest rodeos, concerts and a parade. Centennial Village Museum recreates life on the plains from the 1860s to the 1920s, the Weld County Veterans Memorial honors local service members, and the Poudre River Trail offers miles of riverside walking and biking.
Greeley's historic downtown around 8th and 9th Streets has restored brick buildings with local restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, galleries and the Union Colony Civic Center. It hosts Friday Fest concerts and seasonal events. Park once and walk; the district is compact.
UNC's tree-lined campus near downtown has historic buildings on central campus, art galleries and a well-known music and theater program with public concerts and shows. The campus is pleasant to walk. Check the performing arts calendar for affordable student performances.
Greeley's main performing arts center downtown, with a large theater and a smaller studio stage hosting touring Broadway shows, concerts, comedy, the Greeley Philharmonic and local productions. Its name honors the city's founding as the Union Colony in 1870. Book online ahead of time.
A city-run museum in the restored 1929 Greeley Tribune building downtown, with exhibits on the Union Colony founders, agriculture, sugar beets, immigration and Weld County life. It also holds the city archives. Admission is low cost; allow an hour or so and check opening days.
An outdoor living history museum on the edge of Island Grove Park with more than 30 historic buildings from 1860 to 1920, including homes, a church, a schoolhouse and a blacksmith shop. Costumed interpreters lead demonstrations. It is open seasonally, mostly spring to fall.
The 1870 adobe home of Nathan Meeker, founder of the Union Colony that became Greeley, preserved with period furnishings and family belongings. Guided tours explain the colony's temperance ideals and Meeker's later life. It is open on a limited schedule, so check ahead.
A large Western celebration held each year around the Fourth of July at Island Grove Regional Park, with professional rodeo, big-name country concerts, a carnival, a parade and fireworks. It runs for about two weeks. Buy rodeo and concert tickets early, as popular nights sell out.
A large park and events complex that hosts the Greeley Stampede, the Weld County Fair, horse shows and expos, with arenas, exhibition halls and green space next to Centennial Village. Check the events calendar, as something is usually happening on weekends here.
A peaceful historic park in a residential neighborhood near downtown, built around a pond with an island, footbridges and old shade trees. Ducks and geese gather on the water. It is a favorite spot for a quiet walk and for wedding and family photos, especially in autumn.
Greeley's original town square park in the center of downtown, with large shade trees, monuments and lawns that host concerts, festivals and community gatherings. It sits next to the Weld County Courthouse. Grab food downtown and bring it here for a shaded picnic.
A paved trail of about 21 miles following the Cache la Poudre River from Island Grove Park in Greeley west to Windsor, through wetlands, farm fields and cottonwood groves. It is good for biking, running and wildlife watching. Bring water as there are few services along the way.
A long-running weekly farmers market near downtown, held on Saturday mornings from spring through fall, with Weld County produce, meats, honey, baked goods and crafts. A smaller indoor winter market runs in some years. Go early for the best produce and bring cash or cards.
