About Philadelphia

Philadelphia, founded by William Penn in 1682 on the Delaware River, grew into the largest city in the American colonies and hosted the debates that produced both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Its grid of brick streets, leafy squares and row houses still reflects Penn's plan, and today the city pairs that founding history with major museums and a strong neighborhood food culture.

Independence Hall stands within Independence National Historical Park, steps from the Liberty Bell Center. The Museum of the American Revolution brings the war to life with artifacts including George Washington's field tent. In Old City, Elfreth's Alley is one of the oldest continuously inhabited residential streets in the country, and Christ Church counted several signers among its congregation. Reading Terminal Market is a busy food hall known for roast pork sandwiches and Pennsylvania Dutch baking. Along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Philadelphia Art Museum crowns the steps made famous by Rocky, and the Barnes Foundation holds an exceptional collection of Impressionist and modern art. A statue of Penn tops the tower of City Hall. Eastern State Penitentiary, a former prison, now operates as a museum, and South Street leads to Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, a mosaic labyrinth.

Philadelphia suits history buffs, art lovers and food travelers on a reasonable budget. Fishtown and the Italian Market area reward wandering, and Valley Forge National Historical Park makes an easy half-day trip from the city.
