About Atlantic City

In 1870 Atlantic City laid down the first boardwalk in the United States, and this resort on Absecon Island has been reinventing seaside fun ever since. Railroads brought Philadelphians to the Jersey Shore here in the late 1800s, its streets later gave the Monopoly board their names, and the Miss America pageant began here in 1921.

Today the city is best known for its oceanfront casino resorts, wide free beaches and the long wooden Boardwalk lined with shops, arcades and saltwater taffy stands. Steel Pier still has rides and an observation wheel, Boardwalk Hall hosts concerts and holds one of the world's largest pipe organs, and the Marina District has the Borgata and quieter bay views.

Away from the casinos, visitors can climb the Absecon Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey, explore the aquarium and boat tours at Gardner's Basin, and learn about Chicken Bone Beach. Lucy the Elephant in nearby Margate and the beaches of Ventnor and Ocean City make easy side trips.

Best seasonJune to September for the beach and Boardwalk; spring and fall are quieter with lower hotel rates.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the Boardwalk, beach, lighthouse and a show.
ArrivingAtlantic City International Airport is about 20 minutes away; NJ Transit trains and buses run from Philadelphia and New York.
