About Millville

Glass made Millville. Sand, wood and the tidal Maurice River drew glassworks here in the early 1800s, and for generations the furnaces of Whitall Tatum and later Wheaton turned out bottles, lab glass and tableware. The South Jersey city still calls itself the Holly City of America for the wild holly that grows in the surrounding pinelands.

That heritage lives on at WheatonArts and Cultural Center, where artists blow glass in a working studio beside the Museum of American Glass. Downtown, the Glasstown Arts District gathers galleries, studios and the restored 1908 Levoy Theatre along High Street, with art walks on the third Friday of each month.

Millville's other surprise is its airport, built in 1941 as a gunnery school for P-47 Thunderbolt pilots and now home to an aviation museum. Union Lake, the Maurice River Bluffs and the road courses of New Jersey Motorsports Park round out a visit, and the Delaware Bay shore is a short drive south.

Best seasonApril to October, for open-air events, the racetrack season and paddling on Union Lake.
Ideal stayOne day for WheatonArts and downtown, two with a race weekend or a bayshore trip.
ArrivingPhiladelphia International Airport is about an hour northwest by car; Atlantic City is about 50 minutes east.
