About Baltimore

Baltimore is Maryland's largest city, a historic port on an arm of the Patapsco River near the Chesapeake Bay. It grew as a shipping and industrial center, and its rowhouse neighborhoods, markets and harbor still reflect that working past. The city played a key role in the War of 1812, when the defense of Fort McHenry inspired the words of the national anthem.

The Inner Harbor promenade links many attractions, including historic ships such as the USS Constellation and the National Aquarium. Above the harbor, Federal Hill Park gives a sweeping view of the skyline, and the American Visionary Art Museum nearby showcases self-taught artists. Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine sits at the tip of the peninsula, reachable by water taxi in season. To the east, the cobblestone streets of Fells Point hold old taverns and shops, with Canton and Harbor East offering more dining and waterfront paths. In Mount Vernon, the original Washington Monument rises above a square of grand townhouses, close to the Walters Art Museum. The Baltimore Museum of Art, with its noted Matisse collection, lies farther north near Johns Hopkins.

Baltimore suits travelers who enjoy history, food and neighborhood exploring. Water taxis connect several waterfront areas. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons.
