About Allentown

Allentown is the largest city in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, home to about 125,000 people about 60 miles north of Philadelphia. Founded in 1762 by William Allen, it played a small but famous role in the American Revolution: in 1777 the Liberty Bell was hidden beneath the floor of Zion's Reformed Church to keep it from the British, a story told at the Liberty Bell Museum in the church today.

Downtown centers on Center Square and its Soldiers and Sailors Monument, with Hamilton Street running through the heart of the city. The Allentown Art Museum, Miller Symphony Hall and the PPL Center, home of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms hockey team, anchor a revived arts and entertainment district, and the IronPigs play minor league baseball at Coca-Cola Park.

Allentown is also a city of parks. The Lehigh Parkway follows a creek through woods and meadows, Trexler Memorial Park and the Allentown Rose Garden are favorites for walks, and Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom bring roller coasters and water slides to the city's western edge. Don't leave without trying a hot dog from Yocco's, a local favorite since 1922.

Best seasonMay to September for parks, baseball and Dorney Park, and October for fall color.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown and the Liberty Bell Museum, two with Dorney Park.
ArrivingLehigh Valley International Airport is about 5 miles northeast; Philadelphia and Newark airports are about 75 miles away.
