About Trenton

Trenton is the capital of New Jersey, a city of about 90,000 people on the Delaware River across from Pennsylvania. It played a turning point role in the American Revolution: on the day after Christmas in 1776, George Washington crossed the icy Delaware and surprised Hessian troops here, a victory that revived the patriot cause. The famous bridge sign reading Trenton Makes, The World Takes recalls the city's later industrial might.

The Old Barracks Museum, built in 1758, housed the Hessian soldiers Washington defeated and now offers lively living-history tours. The New Jersey State House, one of the oldest state capitols in continuous use, has a gold dome over West State Street, and the New Jersey State Museum and Trenton Battle Monument are nearby. The William Trent House, built in 1719, belonged to the man who gave the city its name.

The Mill Hill Historic District has restored 19th-century rowhouses and a small park, and Cadwalader Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, holds the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie mansion. The Falls of the Delaware, a stretch of rapids just above downtown, mark the river's tidal limit.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October, plus late December for the reenactment of Washington's crossing and the Battle of Trenton.
Ideal stayOne day for the Old Barracks, State House and historic districts.
ArrivingTrenton Transit Center has Amtrak, NJ Transit and SEPTA trains; Philadelphia and Newark airports are each about 35 to 50 miles away.
