About Flint

Flint is a city of about 80,000 people on the Flint River in mid-Michigan, about an hour north of Detroit. Nicknamed the Vehicle City, it was a carriage-making center that became the birthplace of General Motors in 1908, and the 1936-37 Sit-Down Strike here helped shape the American labor movement.

The Flint Cultural Center gathers several of the city's best attractions on one campus, including the Flint Institute of Arts, the Sloan Museum of Discovery, Longway Planetarium and the Whiting auditorium. Nearby, Applewood Estate preserves the home and gardens of industrialist Charles Stewart Mott, and the Durant-Dort Carriage Company Office is honored as the place where GM began.

Downtown's brick-paved Saginaw Street, framed by Vehicle City arches, has restaurants, cafes and the busy Flint Farmers' Market. Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad, the Flint River Trail and For-Mar Nature Preserve add family outings, while Frankenmuth and Detroit make easy day trips.

Best seasonMay to October; December for the Christmas lights at Crossroads Village.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the Cultural Center, downtown and Crossroads Village.
ArrivingBishop International Airport is in Flint; Detroit Metro Airport is about an hour away via I-75.
