About Yukon

Kolaches, a giant glowing flour sign and the boyhood home of a country superstar give Yukon an identity all its own, even though Oklahoma City's western edge is only a few miles away. Founded in 1891 when the Rock Island railroad came through former Cheyenne and Arapaho land, the town grew around a flour mill and drew many Czech and Bohemian settlers. Today it is a city of about 23,000 people in Canadian County, straddling historic Route 66.

That Czech heritage is celebrated. Each October the Oklahoma Czech Festival fills Main Street with a parade, polka music, folk costumes and kolaches, and the 1920s Czech Hall west of town still hosts dances. On Route 66, the towering Yukon's Best Flour sign on the old mill lights up at night, a favorite stop for road trippers. Garth Brooks grew up here, and the town water tower says so.

Parks are a local strength, especially Chisholm Trail Park, named for the cattle trail that passed nearby and home to a huge holiday lights display each winter. Downtown OKC, Lake Overholser and the Route 66 towns farther west are all a short drive away.

Best seasonEarly October for the Czech Festival; December for Christmas in the Park lights.
Ideal stayHalf a day as a Route 66 stop, or one day around a festival.
ArrivingWill Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City is about 20 minutes southeast; I-40 runs along the south side.
