Valley Stream is an incorporated village of about 40,000 people in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, on Long Island's border with Queens just east of JFK Airport. Settled as a farming hamlet along a small stream in the 1800s, it was incorporated in 1925 and grew quickly as a commuter suburb with Long Island Rail Road stations and easy access to New York City.
The village is known for Green Acres Mall, one of the busiest shopping centers on Long Island, and for its parks. Valley Stream State Park follows the wooded stream that gave the village its name, while Hendrickson Park offers a lake, playgrounds and a summer pool. The Pagan-Fletcher Restoration, a 19th-century farmhouse run by the local historical society, keeps the village's farming past alive.
Valley Stream makes a practical base for travelers using JFK, with quick drives to the Rockaway beaches, Jones Beach, Belmont Park and Manhattan.
A small state park along the wooded valley of the stream that gave the village its name, with walking paths, picnic tables, grills, playgrounds and a dog run. It is an easy escape for a picnic or a stroll under tall trees. Parking fees apply in season; pick a weekday for a quieter visit.
A large shopping mall on Sunrise Highway with department stores, national chains, a food court and a neighboring open-air shopping center. It is one of Long Island's busiest malls and a practical stop for travelers near JFK. Weekday mornings are calmest; buses connect it with Queens and Nassau.
A village park with a small lake, walking paths, playgrounds, sports courts and a popular outdoor swimming pool that opens in summer for residents and guests. Ducks and geese gather around the water. Check village recreation rules for pool access, as non-residents may need a guest pass.
A restored 19th-century farmhouse that serves as the home of the Valley Stream Historical Society, with period rooms, local artifacts and exhibits about the village's farming roots and early growth. It opens for limited hours and special events, so check with the society before visiting.
The public library of Valley Stream, a community hub with reading rooms, local history materials, exhibits and events for children and adults. It is a quiet place to rest, use the wifi or browse local history. Hours vary by season, so check the library's calendar before stopping in.
