About Bloomfield

Bloomfield is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, about 15 miles west of Manhattan. Settled in the 17th century and named in 1796 for Revolutionary War general and governor Joseph Bloomfield, it grew as a mill town along the Second River and the old Morris Canal, and later as an industrial and commuter suburb.

The historic Bloomfield Green, lined with colonial-era houses and the white-steepled Presbyterian church, is the heart of the town and one of the most picturesque greens in northern New Jersey. Nearby, the Historical Society of Bloomfield keeps a small museum of local history, and the Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center hosts concerts and events in a grand historic mansion.

Brookdale Park and Watsessing Park, both designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm for Essex County, offer lawns, sports fields and, at Brookdale, a rose garden. Bloomfield Center has restaurants from many cuisines and a train station with direct service toward Newark and New York, making the town an easy day out from the city.

Best seasonMay to October; June for the Brookdale Park rose garden, fall for colorful foliage.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day.
ArrivingNewark Liberty International Airport is about 20 minutes away; NJ Transit trains stop at Bloomfield and Watsessing Avenue stations.
