About Jersey City

Jersey City is the second-largest city in New Jersey, set on a peninsula across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan. Dutch settlers established Pavonia here in the 1630s, and the city later grew as a railroad terminal and port, the place where millions of immigrants passed from Ellis Island onto trains heading west. Its historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal still stands in Liberty State Park.

Today Jersey City has nearly 300,000 residents and one of the most diverse populations in the country. Its waterfront has transformed into a forest of glass towers, earning it the nickname Wall Street West, while neighborhoods like Paulus Hook, Hamilton Park and the Heights keep their brownstones and row houses. Journal Square and India Square in the city's center are known for food from around the world.

The views of Manhattan are the city's signature. The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway runs for miles along the river, Exchange Place looks straight across at One World Trade Center, and Liberty State Park offers ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, along with the Liberty Science Center. The Empty Sky Memorial honors New Jersey residents lost on September 11.

Best seasonMay to October for the waterfront walkway, ferries and outdoor dining.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Liberty State Park, the Science Center, the waterfront and a few neighborhoods.
ArrivingNewark Airport is about 20 minutes away; PATH trains reach Manhattan in under 10 minutes.
