About Hoboken

Hoboken is a lively city of about 60,000 people on the Hudson River in New Jersey, directly across from Manhattan. Packed into roughly one square mile, it is known for its brownstone-lined streets, a busy waterfront with some of the best views of the New York skyline, and its many bars and restaurants. Frank Sinatra was born here in 1915.

Hoboken has a rich history. One of the first recorded baseball games under modern rules was played at the Elysian Fields in 1846. The grand Hoboken Terminal, opened in 1907, still links trains, PATH, light rail and ferries, and the film On the Waterfront was shot on the city's docks. Stevens Institute of Technology sits on the bluff of Castle Point, and the Hoboken Historical Museum tells the story of the shipyards and immigrant neighborhoods.

Visitors stroll the waterfront walkway through Pier A Park, Sinatra Park and Maxwell Place Park, shop along Washington Street and line up for cannoli at Carlo's Bake Shop, made famous by the TV show Cake Boss. Manhattan is minutes away by PATH train or ferry, making Hoboken an easy and lively base.

Best seasonMay to October for the waterfront parks and outdoor dining; December has festive lights on Washington Street.
Ideal stayOne day, or several days as a base for visiting New York City.
ArrivingPATH trains and NY Waterway ferries reach Manhattan in about 10 to 15 minutes; Newark Liberty Airport is about 25 minutes away.
