About Manhattan

Manhattan is the heart of New York City, a narrow island between the Hudson and East rivers that holds many of the most famous sights in the world. The Lenape called it Manahatta, and the Dutch founded New Amsterdam at its southern tip in 1624. Under British and then American rule it grew into the country's largest city and its financial and cultural capital, with the street grid laid out in 1811 still shaping how people move today.

Manhattan has about 1.6 million residents, but millions more arrive each day to work in Midtown and the Financial District. Its skyline includes the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and One World Trade Center, and its neighborhoods range from the lights of Times Square and the theaters of Broadway to Greenwich Village, Chinatown, SoHo and Harlem.

The island has world-class culture at every turn. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA and the Guggenheim are among the world's great museums, Lincoln Center hosts opera, ballet and the New York Philharmonic, and Central Park offers 843 acres of green in the middle of it all. Grand Central Terminal, the New York Public Library, the High Line, the 9/11 Memorial and ferries to the Statue of Liberty complete a list of sights that could fill weeks.

Best seasonApril to June and September to early December for walking, parks and holiday lights.
Ideal stayThree to five days for the major museums, Central Park, a Broadway show and several neighborhoods.
ArrivingJFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports serve the city; Penn Station and Grand Central connect by rail.
