About East Orange

East Orange is a city of about 69,000 people in Essex County, New Jersey, just west of Newark and about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan. It separated from the old Orange Township in 1863 and grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a commuter suburb along the railroad, with grand homes, apartment buildings and a busy shopping street on Central Avenue.

Today East Orange is a dense, diverse residential city. Brick Church station, a historic stop on the Morris and Essex Lines, links it directly to New York, and Central Avenue still has the early 20th-century commercial buildings that made it a well-known shopping district. Elmwood Park and Watsessing Park provide green space, and the city hosts lively community events.

East Orange is mostly a place to pass through or stay near while exploring the area. Newark's Branch Brook Park, the Newark Museum of Art and the Prudential Center are minutes away, and Montclair, South Mountain Reservation and the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange are close by.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for mild weather and park visits.
Ideal stayA few hours, or stay longer as a base for Newark and New York City.
ArrivingNewark Liberty International Airport is about 15 minutes away; NJ Transit trains reach New York Penn Station in about 30 minutes.
