Englewood sits at the top of the Palisades, a short drive from the George Washington Bridge, and blends a lively small-city downtown with grand old estates and a surprising amount of green space. It grew in the 1850s along the Northern Railroad of New Jersey as a commuter town for New York businessmen, and its tree-lined East Hill is still known for large historic homes.
The biggest draw downtown is bergenPAC, a restored 1920s movie palace that now hosts concerts and comedy. Palisade Avenue and nearby streets are packed with restaurants, bakeries and boutiques. On the west side of the city, Flat Rock Brook Nature Center protects woods, wetlands and an old quarry meadow in the heart of the suburbs.
Down the cliffs, the Englewood Boat Basin gives access to the Hudson River shoreline and Palisades trails with skyline views, while Rockefeller Lookout is a short drive up the parkway. Manhattan is about 30 minutes across the bridge.
Known as bergenPAC, this restored 1920s theater with an ornate auditorium of about 1,300 seats hosts touring musicians, comedians, children's shows and dance on Van Brunt Street. It also runs a performing arts school for young people. Book ahead for headliners and leave time for dinner on Palisade Avenue around the corner.
A preserve of about 150 acres on the west slope of the Palisades with trails through forest, wetlands, a quarry meadow and along a brook with a small dam and pond. A nature center offers programs for children and adults. Admission is free, trails are short and easy, and it is quiet on weekday mornings.
A marina and picnic area at the foot of the Palisades, reached by a winding road down the cliffs, with lawns along the Hudson River and views of the George Washington Bridge and upper Manhattan. The Shore Trail runs north and south along the water from here. A parking fee is charged in season.
Englewood's main city park, with a summer swimming pool complex, playgrounds, tennis courts, ball fields and a walking loop. It is the setting for many community events and holiday celebrations. The pool requires a day pass or membership, so check visitor rules, and arrive early on the hottest summer days.
A Bergen County park on Engle Street at the Englewood and Tenafly border, centered on a formal garden with a gazebo, rose beds and seasonal flowers on the grounds of a former estate. It is a favorite spot for wedding photos and quiet strolls. Visit in June when the roses peak, and note there is no swimming or sports area.
The main street of downtown Englewood, lined with restaurants, cafes, bakeries, clothing boutiques and specialty food shops, with more on Dean Street and Grand Avenue nearby. It is busiest in the evening before shows at bergenPAC. Municipal parking lots behind the stores are easier than looking for street spaces.
A scenic overlook on the Palisades Interstate Parkway a short drive north of Englewood, perched on the cliff edge with a sweeping view up and down the Hudson River toward Yonkers and the Manhattan skyline. Parking is limited to a small lot. Stop on a clear day or at sunrise, and keep children back from the low wall.
