About Fort Lee

Perched on the Palisades cliffs at the western end of the George Washington Bridge, Fort Lee looks straight across the Hudson River at Manhattan. Its name comes from a Revolutionary War fort built in 1776 to block British ships on the river; when the British crossed the Hudson that November, Washington's troops abandoned it and retreated across New Jersey.

A century later the borough became the first home of the American film industry. Before Hollywood, studios such as Universal, Fox and Goldwyn shot silent pictures here, using the cliffs as dramatic backdrops. Today Fort Lee is a dense borough of high-rise apartments with one of the largest Korean-American communities in the country, and Main Street and Lemoine Avenue are lined with Korean restaurants, bakeries and cafes.

Fort Lee Historic Park, Ross Dock on the riverbank and the walkway across the George Washington Bridge are the highlights, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway and the Long Path lead north along the cliffs toward Bear Mountain.

Best seasonApril to October for cliff walks and the bridge; fall foliage on the Palisades peaks in late October.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day, easily combined with upper Manhattan.
ArrivingBuses from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Manhattan; Newark and LaGuardia airports are both about 30 minutes away by car.
