About Staten Island

Staten Island is the southernmost and least populous of New York City's five boroughs, an island in New York Harbor closer in feel to the suburbs than to Manhattan. Dutch explorers named it Staten Eylandt in honor of the Dutch parliament, and it remained largely rural for centuries, its farms and villages linked to the city mainly by ferry until the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964.

Today Staten Island has about 500,000 residents, with leafy neighborhoods, hills and a strong Italian American community. The free Staten Island Ferry, which carries passengers between St. George and Lower Manhattan, is one of the best bargains in the city, passing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island with sweeping skyline views on its 25-minute crossing.

The borough has a surprising amount of history and green space. Historic Richmond Town preserves homes and shops from the 1600s to the 1800s, Snug Harbor Cultural Center fills a former sailors' retirement home with gardens and museums, and Fort Wadsworth guards the Narrows below the Verrazzano Bridge. The Greenbelt protects thousands of acres of woodland and trails in the island's center, and beaches line the south shore.

Best seasonMay to October for the ferry, beaches, gardens and outdoor history sites.
Ideal stayOne day for the ferry, St. George, Snug Harbor and Historic Richmond Town.
ArrivingThe free Staten Island Ferry runs 24 hours from Lower Manhattan; Newark Airport is about 20 minutes away by road.
