About The Bronx

The Bronx is New York City's northernmost borough and the only one on the mainland of the United States. It takes its name from Jonas Bronck, a Swedish-born settler who farmed here in the 1630s, and it grew from estates and villages into a dense urban borough after the subway arrived in the early 1900s. Grand art deco apartment buildings still line the Grand Concourse, the boulevard designed to be the Bronx's answer to the Champs-Elysees.

Today the Bronx has about 1.4 million residents and a strong Latino and Caribbean identity. It is the birthplace of hip-hop, which emerged at block parties in the 1970s, and Arthur Avenue in Belmont is one of the city's most loved Little Italys, with bakeries, delis and old-school restaurants. Yankee Stadium, home of the most successful franchise in American sports, sits just across the river from Manhattan.

The borough is also surprisingly green, with about a quarter of its land in parks. The Bronx Zoo is one of the largest city zoos in the world, the New York Botanical Garden's glass Enid A. Haupt Conservatory anchors 250 acres of gardens, and Pelham Bay Park, the city's largest park, includes Orchard Beach. Van Cortlandt Park, Wave Hill's riverside gardens and the restored High Bridge over the Harlem River round out the outdoor options.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for the zoo, gardens and baseball season.
Ideal stayTwo days for the Bronx Zoo, the Botanical Garden, Arthur Avenue and a Yankees game.
ArrivingLaGuardia Airport is about 20 minutes away; the 4, B and D trains reach Yankee Stadium and the 2 and 5 reach the zoo.
