About Nutley
Nutley packs an artists' colony, a stone Dutch manor and an Olmsted-designed river park into about three square miles of Essex County, just ten miles west of Manhattan. The Third River winds through the township, and its old mill sites gave the early settlement its first industry.
In the late 1800s painters, writers and illustrators gathered in the Enclosure, a leafy enclave of shingled homes, and Frank R. Stockton, author of "The Lady, or the Tiger?", lived in town. Annie Oakley made Nutley her home for several years, and Martha Stewart grew up here. For most of the 20th century the township was also the American headquarters of Hoffmann-La Roche, whose campus is now being reborn as the ON3 development.
