About Bayonne

Bayonne is a city of about 70,000 people on a narrow peninsula in Hudson County, New Jersey, bordered by Newark Bay, the Kill Van Kull and Upper New York Bay, just south of Jersey City and across the water from Staten Island and Manhattan. Once a center of oil refining and shipping, it is a close-knit city of row houses, churches and long-established neighborhoods along Broadway.

The great steel arch of the Bayonne Bridge, opened in 1931 and raised in 2019 for larger ships, links the city to Staten Island and now carries a walking and biking path. On the former Military Ocean Terminal, the Cape Liberty Cruise Port sends large cruise ships to Bermuda, the Caribbean and beyond, and nearby stands the striking Tear of Grief, a memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks given by Russia.

Waterfront parks such as Dennis P. Collins Park and 16th Street Park offer harbor and bridge views, while Stephen R. Gregg Bayonne Park provides lawns and trails along Newark Bay. Light rail trains reach Jersey City and Hoboken in minutes, making Manhattan easy to reach.

Best seasonMay to October for waterfront parks and cruise departures.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day, or one night before a cruise from Cape Liberty.
ArrivingNewark Liberty International Airport is about 20 minutes away; Hudson-Bergen Light Rail connects to Jersey City and PATH trains.
