About Teaneck

Teaneck sits along the Hackensack River in Bergen County, about 10 miles from Midtown Manhattan, and it made national history in 1964 as one of the first towns in the country to voluntarily desegregate its public schools by a vote of its own school board. That spirit of civic pride still defines a diverse, leafy community of tree-lined streets and busy local shopping districts.

Cedar Lane is the lively commercial spine, with independent shops, international restaurants and an old movie house, while Queen Anne Road and the surrounding area are known for one of the largest concentrations of kosher restaurants and bakeries in the region. Fairleigh Dickinson University's Metropolitan Campus sits on the river.

Green space is a big part of the appeal. Overpeck County Park spreads along the creek on the town's eastern side, and the Teaneck Creek Conservancy turned a neglected wetland into an eco-art park with trails and outdoor sculptures. The Puffin Cultural Forum adds concerts, films and exhibitions on social themes.

Best seasonApril to October for parks, outdoor dining and creek trails.
Ideal stayA half day to a full day, easy as a trip from New York City.
ArrivingInterstate 95 and Route 4 pass through town; buses run to the Port Authority in Manhattan, and Newark Airport is about 30 minutes away.
