About Newark

Newark is the largest city in New Jersey, set on the Passaic River about eight miles west of Lower Manhattan. Puritans from Connecticut founded it in 1666, making it one of the oldest major cities in the United States, and in the 1800s it became an industrial powerhouse known for leather, jewelry, beer and insurance. The grand 1900s buildings downtown, including the domed City Hall and the Essex County Courthouse, date from those prosperous years.

Today Newark has about 300,000 residents and is a major transportation hub, with Newark Liberty International Airport, Port Newark and Penn Station all central to the region. The city has seen a revival downtown, where the Prudential Center hosts the New Jersey Devils and big concerts, and the Ironbound district, with its Portuguese, Brazilian and Spanish restaurants, is one of the best places to eat in the state.

Culture and green space are strong draws. The Newark Museum of Art is the largest museum in New Jersey, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center stages world-class performances, and the soaring Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is one of the largest cathedrals in North America. Branch Brook Park, designed by the Olmsted firm, holds the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the country, peaking each April.

Best seasonApril for the cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park; May to October for festivals and Ironbound patios.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the Newark Museum of Art, the cathedral, Branch Brook Park and an Ironbound dinner.
ArrivingNewark Liberty International Airport is about 15 minutes away; NJ Transit, PATH and Amtrak stop at Newark Penn Station.
