About Cheektowaga

Cheektowaga is a town of about 89,000 people in Erie County, New York, bordering the east side of Buffalo. Formed in 1839, it takes its name from a Seneca word often translated as place of the crabapple tree. German and Alsatian farmers settled it first, and in the 20th century it became home to many Polish-American families moving out from Buffalo's East Side, a heritage still visible in its churches, bakeries and festivals.

The town is home to Buffalo Niagara International Airport and the Walden Galleria, the largest shopping mall in western New York. Its most beloved historic site is the small stone Our Lady Help of Christians Chapel, built in the 1850s by an Alsatian immigrant, and several large Polish-American parishes have striking church buildings.

For nature, Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve protects forest, ponds and wetlands with free guided walks, while Cheektowaga Town Park and Stiglmeier Park offer trails and recreation. Downtown Buffalo and Niagara Falls are both close by.

Best seasonMay to October; spring for Polish Easter and Dyngus Day traditions nearby.
Ideal stayHalf a day, or a base near the airport for Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
ArrivingBuffalo Niagara International Airport is in the town; downtown Buffalo is about 15 minutes west.
