About Harrison

Behind the stone walls and wooded estates of this Westchester town lies one of the best outdoor art collections in the New York area. Harrison, a town and village that includes the hamlets of Purchase and West Harrison, was settled in the late 1600s on land bought by John Harrison, and Quaker farmers gave Purchase its early character.

Today Purchase is a center for culture. The Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens spread works by famous modern sculptors across the lawns of PepsiCo's headquarters, and Purchase College, part of the State University of New York, hosts the Neuberger Museum of Art and a busy performing arts center. Nearby, Manhattanville University occupies a campus around Reid Hall, a granite castle built as a Gilded Age mansion.

The village center along Halstead Avenue has Italian restaurants, bakeries and a commuter rail station on the New Haven Line. Silver Lake Preserve offers wooded trails in West Harrison, and the beaches of Rye and the shops of White Plains are just minutes away.

Best seasonMay to October for the sculpture gardens and trails; fall for foliage and the arts season.
Ideal stayA day for the sculpture gardens, the Neuberger and an evening show.
ArrivingWestchester County Airport sits at the edge of Purchase; Metro-North trains reach Grand Central from Harrison station in about 40 minutes.
