About Brooklyn

Brooklyn is New York City's most populous borough, spread across the western end of Long Island across the East River from Manhattan. Dutch settlers founded the village of Breuckelen in the 1640s, and Brooklyn grew into a major city of its own, the third largest in the United States, before joining New York City in 1898. The opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 tied it to Manhattan and became one of the great engineering feats of the century.

Today Brooklyn has about 2.6 million residents and a famously varied mix of neighborhoods. Brownstone streets in Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant sit alongside the warehouses-turned-studios of Williamsburg and DUMBO, the Caribbean culture of Flatbush and the Russian enclave of Brighton Beach. Its restaurants, music venues and independent shops have made Brooklyn a byword for creative city life.

Visitors come for walks across the Brooklyn Bridge, the views from Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and the green expanse of Prospect Park, designed by the same team as Central Park. The Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanic Garden sit side by side, Barclays Center hosts concerts and NBA games, and Coney Island's boardwalk, beach and Wonder Wheel are a classic summer outing at the end of the subway line.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for walking, parks and Coney Island's season from late May.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the bridge and waterfront, Prospect Park, the museum and a few neighborhoods.
ArrivingJFK and LaGuardia airports are 30 to 60 minutes away; the subway connects every neighborhood to Manhattan.
