About Yonkers

Yonkers is the largest city in Westchester County and the fourth largest in New York State, set on the Hudson River just north of the Bronx. Its name comes from Adriaen van der Donck, a Dutch landowner known as the jonkheer, or young gentleman, who received a land grant here in the 1640s. Later the Philipse family built a vast manor, and their 1680s Philipse Manor Hall still stands downtown as a museum.

In the 1800s Yonkers became an industrial city, home to the Alexander Smith carpet mills and the Otis Elevator Company, where the safety elevator was developed. Today it has about 210,000 residents and a revived downtown waterfront. Its most striking project uncovered the Saw Mill River, which had been buried under the streets, creating a series of landscaped stream parks right in the city center.

The riverfront offers sweeping views of the Palisades cliffs across the Hudson from the Yonkers Pier and Esplanade. The Hudson River Museum combines art, history and a planetarium, and Untermyer Park and Gardens, once part of a grand estate, is one of the most beautiful public gardens in the region. Metro-North trains reach Grand Central in about 30 minutes.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for gardens, riverfront walks and fall colors.
