About New York City

Spread over five boroughs where the Hudson meets the Atlantic, New York has been the arrival point for generations of immigrants and remains a powerhouse of money, media, theater and art. Manhattan's skyline is the familiar image, but Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island each have their own distinct neighborhoods, food cultures and histories.

Many first visits include a harbor trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, or the free Staten Island Ferry for a similar view. Downtown, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum is a sobering stop, and a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge leads into DUMBO. Midtown packs in Times Square, Broadway theaters, Grand Central Terminal and the observation decks at the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock. On the West Side, the High Line threads above the streets toward Little Island and Chelsea Market, while Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art can fill a full day uptown.

The city suits nearly any pace, but it rewards walking and the subway rather than driving. Staying in one area and exploring by neighborhood keeps days manageable. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, while December brings holiday windows and crowds.

Best seasonApril to June and September to November bring mild weather; December is festive but crowded.
Ideal stayFour to six days covers the major sights with time for a few neighborhoods.
ArrivingMost travelers fly into JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, and Amtrak trains arrive at Penn Station.
