About Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh sits in western Pennsylvania where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio. Once famous for steel, the city has reinvented itself around education, healthcare and technology, but its industrial past remains visible in its bridges, hillside neighborhoods and riverfronts. It is sometimes called the City of Bridges for the large number of spans crossing its rivers.

Point State Park, at the tip of the downtown triangle, marks the meeting of the rivers with a large fountain. Across the Monongahela, the Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines climb Mount Washington, offering a famous view of the skyline. The Heinz History Center explores regional history, and the Strip District is known for food markets and shops. On the North Side, the Andy Warhol Museum covers the life and work of the Pittsburgh-born artist, while the Mattress Factory presents installation art in the historic Mexican War Streets. PNC Park and the North Shore riverfront are lively on game days. In Oakland, the Gothic Cathedral of Learning houses the University of Pittsburgh's Nationality Rooms, and the Carnegie Museums of Natural History and Art share a building. Phipps Conservatory sits in Schenley Park.

Pittsburgh suits travelers who enjoy museums, sports, and distinctive neighborhoods. Its hilly terrain makes for great views.

Best seasonMay to October for riverfront events, baseball and comfortable walking weather.
