Tudor gables, brick sidewalks and a streetcar line running right through the business district set Mt. Lebanon apart from most American suburbs. The township grew quickly in the 1920s after the trolley and the Liberty Tubes made it an easy commute to Pittsburgh, and much of that era survives: a large part of the community is listed as the Mt. Lebanon Historic District for its revival-style homes and planned streets.
Life centers on Uptown, the walkable stretch of Washington Road where locally owned restaurants, bakeries, bookshops and boutiques sit above and around the Mt. Lebanon station of Pittsburgh's light rail. Nearby, the stone towers of St. Bernard Church and Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church show the ambition of the boom years, and the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon keeps the story of the township's growth.
Green space is close at hand: Main Park holds the veterans memorial, a pool, tennis courts and an ice rink, while wooded Bird Park offers trails just off Uptown. Downtown Pittsburgh is about twenty minutes away by T.
The township's main business district along Washington Road, with independent restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, boutiques and a bookstore in brick buildings from the 1920s and 1930s. The T light rail stops right underneath it. Come for a weekend brunch, and check the township calendar for summer street festivals.
A very large district on the National Register of Historic Places, covering thousands of homes built mostly between the 1910s and 1940s in Tudor, Colonial and other revival styles along curving, tree-lined streets. It is a lovely area for an unhurried walk or bike ride. Start near Uptown and wander the side streets heading west.
The township's central park, home to a veterans memorial, playgrounds, sports fields, tennis courts, an outdoor pool and the recreation center with its ice rink. Families gather here for summer swimming and winter skating. Public skating hours and pool passes are posted by the township, so check before you go.
A wooded park a short walk from Uptown with a network of dirt trails through a ravine, a stream, wildflowers in spring and plenty of birdsong. It feels far from the busy streets nearby. Wear sturdy shoes, since paths can be steep and muddy after rain, and keep dogs leashed on the narrow trails.
A volunteer-run society that collects photos, maps and stories of the township's growth from farmland to streetcar suburb. It offers exhibits, walking tours of historic neighborhoods and talks during the year. Check its schedule for guided house and architecture tours, which are the best way to learn the district.
A large Roman Catholic parish church on Washington Road in Gothic Revival style, with a tall stone tower, detailed carvings and rich stained glass. It is one of the most striking buildings in the township. Visitors are welcome outside Mass times; step in quietly to see the windows and vaulted interior.

A compact public golf course run by the township, set on rolling ground near the center of Mt. Lebanon. It suits beginners, families and anyone after a quick round. Tee times are usually easy to find on weekdays, and the rolling fairways make for a pleasant walk with views over the surrounding neighborhoods.
