About Wayne

Wayne began as one of the first planned railroad suburbs in America: in the 1880s, developers sold Philadelphians the dream of country air one train ride from Center City. That Main Line village, named for Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne, now holds about 32,000 people across Radnor and neighboring townships.

The Victorian homes of North Wayne still line shady streets near the station, and Lancaster Avenue keeps its 1906 Wayne Hotel, a 1920s movie theater and a walkable run of boutiques and cafes. The big draw is Chanticleer, an inventive pleasure garden on a former estate, while Stoneleigh and the Willows add more free green escapes nearby.

General Wayne himself is buried at Old St. David's Church, a stone chapel from 1715 hidden in the woods. The Radnor Trail follows an old trolley line for easy walks, and Valley Forge National Historical Park and Philadelphia are both within a half-hour drive.

Best seasonApril to October, when Chanticleer is open and the gardens peak in late spring and fall.
Ideal stayOne full day, or a relaxed weekend combined with Valley Forge and Philadelphia.
ArrivingSEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line stops at Wayne station; Philadelphia International Airport is about 30 to 40 minutes by car.
