About Perth Amboy

Perth Amboy is a historic waterfront city of about 55,000 people in Middlesex County, New Jersey, where the Raritan River meets Raritan Bay and the Arthur Kill, across the water from Staten Island. Founded in the 1680s and named partly for the Earl of Perth, it served as the capital of the colony of East Jersey and later shared the role of New Jersey's capital with Burlington.

That colonial past is still visible. The Proprietary House, completed in the 1760s, is the only surviving royal governor's mansion of the original 13 colonies and was home to William Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's loyalist son. Perth Amboy City Hall is one of the oldest city halls in continuous use in the country, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church has one of the oldest Episcopal congregations in New Jersey. In 1870 resident Thomas Mundy Peterson became the first African American to vote under the 15th Amendment.

Today the city has a large Puerto Rican and Dominican community and a revitalized waterfront, with a long bayfront promenade, a marina and sunset views toward the Outerbridge Crossing and Staten Island.

Best seasonMay to October for waterfront walks, the marina and outdoor festivals.
Ideal stayHalf a day to one day for the historic sites and waterfront.
ArrivingNJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line stops in Perth Amboy, about an hour from New York Penn Station; Newark Liberty Airport is about 25 minutes north.
