About Birmingham

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, set in Jones Valley at the southern end of the Appalachian foothills, ringed by wooded ridges. It was founded in 1871 at the crossing of two railroads, in a rare spot where iron ore, coal and limestone, the three ingredients of steel, were all found close together. The city grew so quickly into an iron and steel giant that it earned the nickname the Magic City, and named itself after the industrial city of Birmingham, England.

Birmingham is also at the heart of American civil rights history. In 1963 the Birmingham Campaign led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and local leader Fred Shuttlesworth, including the Children's Crusade and the tragic bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, helped push the nation toward the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today the Birmingham Civil Rights District, a national monument, includes the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the church and Kelly Ingram Park, and is a moving place to visit.

Today the city has about 195,000 residents and a lively, revitalized character, with a celebrated food scene, craft breweries and neighborhoods like Avondale, Five Points South and the Lakeview District. The giant cast-iron statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of the forge, stands atop Red Mountain with an observation tower over the city, and Sloss Furnaces preserves a massive former ironworks as a museum and event venue. Railroad Park downtown, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Red Mountain Park round out a visit.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for warm, pleasant days; summers are hot and humid, and winters are mild.
Ideal stayTwo days for the Civil Rights District, Vulcan Park, Sloss Furnaces, Railroad Park and the city's restaurants and breweries.
ArrivingBirmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is about 10 minutes northeast of downtown, and Interstates 20, 59 and 65 meet in the city.
