Westminster is a city of about 115,000 people between Denver and Boulder, with sweeping views of the Front Range and a surprising amount of open space. It began as a farming community in the late 1800s, and its most famous landmark, the red sandstone Westminster Castle, was built as a university in 1908 and still crowns the hill above Federal Boulevard.
Westminster is known for its parks and trails. Standley Lake Regional Park offers boating, paddling and camping with mountain views, Metzger Farm Open Space preserves a historic farm where deer graze in the fields, and the Big Dry Creek Trail winds through the city for miles. The Butterfly Pavilion lets visitors walk among thousands of butterflies and meet tarantulas and other invertebrates.
The Westminster Promenade has an ice center, movie theater and restaurants, and the new Downtown Westminster is growing with shops and plazas. The Bowles House Museum preserves an 1870s farmhouse and early city history, and Boulder, Golden and downtown Denver are each about 20 minutes away.
A red sandstone castle-like building completed in 1908 on a hill above the city, built for Westminster University and later used by the Pillar of Fire church and its Belleview College. It is on the National Register. It is private, so admire the tower and views from public streets.
A restored 1876 brick farmhouse built by Edmund Bowles, a pioneer of the area, now run as a small museum by the Westminster Historical Society with period rooms and local history displays. It opens on limited days, mostly weekends in warmer months, so check before going.
A new walkable downtown district being built on the site of the former Westminster Mall at 88th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, with apartments, restaurants, a movie theater, a central park and an events plaza. It hosts summer concerts and holiday markets; check the city events list.
An entertainment complex near US 36 with a large movie theater, an ice center, restaurants, a hotel and a pond with walking paths and fountains. It is a handy evening stop for dinner and a film. The ice center offers public skating sessions; check the schedule online.
A city-owned 18-hole golf course in north Westminster that winds through wetlands and open space, with wide mountain views to the west. Green fees are reasonable for a public course. Book tee times online in summer and bring water, as the high-altitude sun is strong.
An open-air shopping center at I-25 and 144th Avenue in north Westminster with department stores, national chains, restaurants and a movie theater around walkable streets. It is pleasant on mild days. Parking is free, and events such as holiday lighting are held in winter.
An insect zoo with a tropical conservatory where about 1,600 butterflies fly freely, plus exhibits on spiders, insects and ocean invertebrates, including Rosie the tarantula, which visitors may hold. It is great for children. Allow about two hours and book tickets online for weekends.
A large reservoir park with views of the Front Range, offering paddling, sailing, fishing, camping and walking trails, plus bald eagle nests in winter. Gas boats need permits and inspections. Arrive early on summer weekends, and check which areas allow paddleboards and kayaks.
A former farm on the Westminster and Broomfield border preserved as open space, with historic farm buildings, a pond, walking trails and wildlife such as hawks and coyotes. The easy trails suit families and dog walkers. Dogs must stay leashed, and it has little shade.
A paved multi-use trail that follows Big Dry Creek across Westminster for miles, linking parks, open spaces and neighborhoods. It is popular for cycling, running and walking, with views of the Rockies. Standley Lake and the Promenade area make good trailheads with parking.
One of the largest off-leash dog areas in the Denver area, a fenced 400-plus acre open space of rolling prairie with trails and mountain views. Dogs can run freely under voice control. Bring water for you and your dog, as there is little shade and few facilities.
