About Denver

Denver sits on the high plains at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains, a mile above sea level, which explains its nickname, the Mile High City. It began as a gold rush camp in 1858 and grew into the commercial hub of the Mountain West. Today it combines a compact downtown, a strong arts and brewing culture, and quick access to the foothills, with the mountains visible on the western horizon most days.

The gold-domed Colorado State Capitol anchors the Civic Center, and nearby the Denver Art Museum, the Clyfford Still Museum and the History Colorado Center form a cultural cluster within a few blocks. Denver Union Station, a restored rail terminal, now serves as a gathering place with restaurants and a hotel, a short walk from the Victorian storefronts of Larimer Square. The River North Art District is covered in murals and full of galleries and breweries, and Meow Wolf's Convergence Station offers an immersive art experience. City Park holds the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and the Denver Botanic Gardens are a highlight in summer.

Denver makes a practical base for trips into the Rockies, and Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, set among towering sandstone formations west of town, is worth seeing even without a concert. Neighborhoods like LoDo and RiNo suit evenings out. The sun shines often, and winters are milder than many expect.

Best seasonLate spring through early fall brings warm, sunny days and the full Red Rocks concert season.
Ideal stayThree days covers downtown museums, a couple of neighborhoods and a trip to Red Rocks.
ArrivingDenver International Airport is the main gateway, with a commuter rail line running to Union Station.
