Longmont is a city of about 100,000 people in northern Colorado, set on the plains with sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains to the west. It was founded in 1871 as the Chicago-Colorado Colony by settlers from Illinois, and named after Longs Peak, the 14,259-foot mountain that dominates the skyline. Farming, especially sugar beets, shaped its early growth.
Today Longmont mixes its agricultural roots with a growing tech and craft brewing scene. Its historic Main Street has restored brick buildings with restaurants, coffee shops and the Longmont Museum, which hosts exhibits on regional history and art. The city is a hub for craft beer and outdoor recreation.
Longmont's greatest draws are its views and green spaces. Union Reservoir and McIntosh Lake offer paddling and fishing with Longs Peak reflected in the water, the St. Vrain Greenway trail runs through the city, and Rocky Mountain National Park and the town of Lyons are less than an hour away.
Historic downtown along Main Street with restored brick buildings, local restaurants, breweries, galleries and shops. It hosts events like street fairs and art walks in warm months. Visit on a summer evening when patios are full, and look for public art along the side streets.
City museum with exhibits on the history of Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley, changing art and history exhibitions, and the Stewart Auditorium for talks and concerts. It is family friendly with hands-on areas. Check the calendar for special shows and the popular Day of the Dead celebration.
Small museum south of Longmont with a collection of antique automobiles, horse-drawn carriages and old machines, many in working order. It is run by Boulder County and opens only on limited summer days. Check the schedule before going, as hours are short.
Historic ranch on the east side of Longmont with a restored 1880s sandstone house, a visitor and learning center about the area's farming and natural history, plus sports fields and trails. It overlooks St. Vrain Creek. Visit the house on open days and walk the trail to the creek.
Lake on the west side of Longmont with a loop trail of about three and a half miles and great views of Longs Peak and the Front Range. It is popular for walking, running, fishing and paddling. Come at sunrise or sunset for mountain views, and watch for waterbirds along the shore.
City-run reservoir east of town with a swimming beach, camping, fishing, paddleboarding and boating, plus mountain views across the water. It is a popular summer escape. Pay the entry fee at the gate, and come early on hot weekends, as the beach area fills up.
Paved trail that follows St. Vrain Creek across Longmont, linking parks, ponds and neighborhoods. It is great for biking, walking and spotting birds along the water. Start near Golden Ponds and ride east along the creek, and bring water on hot days.
Central city park near downtown with lawns, gardens, a playground, a pavilion and an activity center, hosting summer events and concerts. It is a good stop with kids. Bring a picnic, and check the city calendar for concerts and community events in the park.
Nature area of several ponds on the west side of Longmont, with trails, fishing piers and good bird watching, and a link to the St. Vrain Greenway. It is calm and easy for families. Bring binoculars for herons and ducks, and a fishing rod if you have a license.
City-owned watershed preserve in the foothills northwest of Longmont, with trails along the North St. Vrain Creek up to Ralph Price Reservoir, rocky canyons and forests. Fishing is allowed with rules, and dogs are not. Arrive early, as parking is limited, and bring water.
Longmont brewery founded in the 1990s and known for its Milk Stout Nitro, with a taproom and patio serving a wide range of beers. It is one of several well-known breweries in town. Try a flight in the taproom, and check for food trucks and events on weekends.
Saturday farmers market at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont with local produce, meat, cheese, bread, flowers and prepared food, running from spring to fall. It is one of the best markets in the area. Come early for the best choice and bring bags.
