About Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park, in the southwest corner of Colorado, protects thousands of archaeological sites left by the Ancestral Pueblo people, who lived on and below these mesas for roughly seven centuries. Their stone dwellings, tucked into alcoves in the canyon walls, are among the best-preserved in North America, and the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The setting is a high, forested tableland cut by deep canyons.

Most visits begin at the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center near the entrance, where exhibits introduce the culture and tickets for ranger-guided tours are arranged. The road then climbs past Park Point, the highest overlook, and the Far View Sites, a cluster of mesa-top villages. The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum stands near an overlook of Spruce Tree House, and the Petroglyph Point Trail leads to rock carvings below the rim. Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling, and Balcony House, reached by ladders and a tight tunnel, can be entered only on guided tours.

The park rewards travelers curious about history and willing to spend time on narrow mountain roads. The Mesa Top Loop Road links pithouses and overlooks in chronological order, and the Soda Canyon Overlook Trail offers a short walk to canyon views. Long House on Wetherill Mesa is more remote. Many tours operate only seasonally.

Best seasonLate spring through early fall is best, when guided cliff dwelling tours and all park roads are typically open.
Ideal stayOne full day covers the main sites, though two days allows a second guided tour and Wetherill Mesa.
ArrivingMost visitors drive in and stay in nearby Cortez or Durango, both of which have regional airports.
