About Commerce City

Commerce City is a city of about 62,000 people in Adams County, Colorado, just northeast of downtown Denver. It began as the farming and industrial settlement of Derby and was incorporated in 1952, taking a name that reflected its railroads, refineries and warehouses. Newer neighborhoods have since spread north toward Denver International Airport.

The city's standout attraction is the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, a former chemical weapons and pesticide site that was cleaned up and turned into one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the country. Bison, deer, burrowing owls and bald eagles live on its restored prairie, and a scenic wildlife drive and visitor center make it easy to visit. Next door is Dick's Sporting Goods Park, home of Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids.

Visitors can also walk or bike the Sand Creek Regional Greenway, play golf at Buffalo Run, browse the huge Mile High Flea Market just to the north and watch eagles at Barr Lake State Park. Downtown Denver, its museums and the Front Range foothills are all within a short drive.

Best seasonApril to October; fall and winter are good for bald eagles at the Arsenal and Barr Lake.
Ideal stayHalf a day to one day, or combine with a Denver trip.
ArrivingDenver International Airport is about 20 minutes east; Interstate 76 and Interstate 270 run through the city.
