Greenhouses full of carnations once made Wheat Ridge famous far beyond Colorado, and the town still calls itself the Carnation City. Wedged between Denver and Golden along Clear Creek, this Jefferson County city of roughly 32,000 grew from 1859-era farms that fed gold rush miners, and it was only incorporated in 1969.
Today Wheat Ridge is a quiet base with big green spaces. The Clear Creek greenbelt runs straight through town, Crown Hill Park circles a lake with a wildlife sanctuary, and the Historical Park keeps an 1859 log cabin and a rare sod house. On the eastern edge, Lakeside Amusement Park has spun its vintage rides beside Lake Rhoda since 1908.
The 38th Avenue strip, branded Ridge at 38, gathers local cafes, taprooms and the August Carnation Festival crowds. Golden, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and downtown Denver are each about 15 to 25 minutes away, which makes Wheat Ridge an easy, affordable place to stay for Front Range day trips.
A large open-space park around Crown Hill Lake, with a flat loop trail, a fenced wildlife sanctuary at Kestrel Pond and wide views to the foothills. Expect ducks, herons and plenty of joggers and horse riders. Come early on summer mornings, before the afternoon heat and wind pick up.
A busy community park on the Clear Creek greenbelt with a fishing lake, playgrounds, picnic shelters and sports fields. The trail footbridge here is a handy starting point for walks along the creek. Shelters can be reserved through the city for group picnics on summer weekends.
A tall Gothic-style mausoleum tower rising over Crown Hill Cemetery, a west Denver landmark for nearly a century and visible from far across the plains. The grounds are peaceful for a slow walk among old monuments. Visit respectfully during daylight hours and check the gate times before you go.
A small museum park run by the local historical society, keeping the 1859 Baugh log cabin, a rare 1880s sod house and other farm-era buildings that tell the story of the town's homesteaders and flower growers. Opening hours are limited, so check the society's schedule before visiting.
A handsome 19th-century brick estate home set on shaded lawns, one of the oldest surviving houses in Wheat Ridge. It is now a city-owned venue used for weddings and community events, so the interior is not always open, but the grounds and the facade are worth a look on a neighborhood stroll.
A green ribbon of ponds, cottonwoods and wetlands following Clear Creek across the whole city. The paved Clear Creek Trail runs through it, linking west to Golden and east toward Denver, so you can walk a short loop or ride for hours. Watch for deer, foxes and great blue herons near the water.
A family-run amusement park on the edge of Wheat Ridge that opened in 1908, known for its glowing Art Deco tower, the wooden Cyclone roller coaster and a miniature train circling Lake Rhoda. Rides are old-school and inexpensive. It opens seasonally, so check the calendar before heading over.
The city's big summer festival, held each August in honor of the carnation greenhouses that once covered Wheat Ridge. Expect a parade, carnival rides, live music, food trucks and a beer garden at Anderson Park. Parking fills fast, so walk or bike in along the greenbelt if you can.
The 38th Avenue corridor between Wadsworth and Sheridan, rebranded as Ridge at 38, with independent restaurants, coffee shops, taprooms and a few vintage stores. It is the closest thing Wheat Ridge has to a main street and hosts small seasonal events. Evenings are relaxed and parking is easy.
