About Goderich

Goderich sits on a bluff above Lake Huron at the mouth of the Maitland River, a planned town laid out in the 1820s by the Canada Company. Its unusual octagonal central square, with streets radiating outward, gives it a distinctive layout. The town is also home to a deep salt mine beneath the harbor, and its sunsets over the lake are a local point of pride.

Life centers on The Square, where the courthouse sits in the middle of the octagon, ringed by shops and cafés. The area was rebuilt after a tornado struck in 2011, and new trees now line its streets. The Huron County Historic Gaol, an octagonal stone jail from the nineteenth century, offers tours, while the Huron County Museum covers rural life and local history. On Saturdays in season, the Goderich Farmers' Market brings produce and baked goods to the square. Down by the water, the Goderich Lighthouse looks out over the harbor, and beaches and a boardwalk stretch along the shore. The Menesetung Bridge, a former rail bridge over the Maitland, is now a pedestrian crossing. Nearby, Point Farms Provincial Park and the Falls Reserve Conservation Area add beaches and riverside trails.

Goderich suits families, cyclists, and sunset seekers. Summer is the main season, and the Goderich-to-Auburn Rail Trail extends inland.

Best seasonJune to September for beach days and lakeside sunsets; early fall is quieter.
Ideal stayOne or two days covers the square, the gaol and the beaches.
ArrivingMost travelers drive from London or Kitchener-Waterloo; the town sits where Highways 8 and 21 meet.
