About Toronto

Canada's largest city stretches along the north shore of Lake Ontario, and few places anywhere are as diverse; a large share of residents were born outside the country. Toronto grew from the colonial town of York into a financial and cultural hub, and it reads best as a patchwork of distinct neighborhoods connected by streetcars and subway lines.

The CN Tower, with its glass floor and lookout, is the inescapable landmark by the lakefront. A few blocks east, St. Lawrence Market is a traditional stop for peameal bacon sandwiches, and the Victorian industrial buildings of the Distillery District now house galleries and cafés. Ferries cross the harbor to the Toronto Islands, a car-free retreat with beaches and the best skyline view. Rainy days suit the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario, while Casa Loma, an early twentieth-century castle-style mansion, sits on the hill above downtown. Kensington Market and Chinatown pack vintage shops and food stalls into a few blocks, and High Park and the trails around Evergreen Brick Works in the Don Valley offer greener breaks.

Toronto works well for city lovers who enjoy eating their way through neighborhoods. Winters are cold, so summer and early fall are the liveliest times. Niagara Falls is a popular day trip around the lake.

Best seasonJune through September for patios, island ferries and festivals; September adds the international film festival.
Ideal stayFour days lets you mix major sights with several neighborhoods.
