About Southfield

Southfield is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, bordering the northwest side of Detroit. Once farmland, it boomed after the 1950s as a business center, and today its skyline of office towers, freeway interchanges and corporate campuses makes it one of the largest employment hubs in metro Detroit, while tree-lined neighborhoods and nature preserves surround the business districts.

The best-known landmark is Southfield Town Center, a cluster of mirrored-glass skyscrapers visible for miles. The city is also known for its striking houses of worship, including the Mother of God Chaldean Catholic Cathedral, St. George Romanian Orthodox Cathedral and St. John Armenian Church, which reflect the diverse communities of the area. Burgh Historic Park preserves early township buildings, and the Gothic tower of the former Duns Scotus College rises over Nine Mile Road.

Lawrence Technological University adds modern architecture, and Valley Woods and Carpenter Lake nature preserves offer quiet trails. Downtown Detroit is about 20 minutes away.

Best seasonMay to October for walks in the nature preserves and outdoor events.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day, or as a convenient base for exploring metro Detroit.
ArrivingDetroit Metropolitan Airport is about 25 minutes away by car via the freeways.
