About West Bloomfield Township
West Bloomfield Township is a residential community of about 65,000 people in Oakland County, Michigan, about 25 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. It is known for its many lakes, wooded neighborhoods and nature preserves, and for large Jewish, Chaldean and South Asian communities whose institutions are centered here.
The township's lakes, including Orchard Lake, Pine Lake and parts of Cass Lake, have long drawn summer homes and boaters. Orchard Lake holds Apple Island, a wooded island with Native American and early settler history that is now protected as a nature preserve. The West Bloomfield Trail, a former railroad line, crosses the township through woods and wetlands, and the West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve is known for its heron rookery.
West Bloomfield is a quiet base for visiting the northern Detroit suburbs. Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills and the Cranbrook Educational Community are a short drive east, and downtown Detroit is about 35 to 40 minutes away.
