About Port Huron

Thousand-foot freighters glide close enough to wave at in Port Huron, where Lake Huron pours into the swift blue St. Clair River beneath the twin arches of the Blue Water Bridge to Canada. The city of about 28,000 people sits at the tip of Michigan's Thumb, an hour northeast of Detroit, with Sarnia, Ontario just across the water.

Fort Gratiot was built here in 1814, and its 1829 lighthouse is the oldest in Michigan. A young Thomas Edison grew up in town and sold newspapers on the Grand Trunk trains; the depot where he caught them is now a museum. Lumber, shipping and the railroad shaped the city, and its maritime story is told aboard the retired lightship Huron and in the Carnegie-library museum downtown.

Visitors watch ships from riverfront parks, swim at Lakeside Park, walk or bike the Bridge to Bay Trail and catch the July start of the Bayview Mackinac sailing race. Lexington's harbor and the beaches of the Thumb lie a short drive north.

Best seasonJune to September for beaches, freighter watching and the Mackinac race; fall for lake-shore color.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the lighthouse, museums and riverfront.
ArrivingI-94 and I-69 end at the Blue Water Bridge; Detroit Metro Airport is about 75 miles away, and Amtrak's Blue Water train ends here.
