About Bay City

Bay City made its fortune from white pine. In the late 1800s sawmills lined the Saginaw River for miles, and the lumber barons who ran them built the grand Victorian mansions that still line Center Avenue. The city sits where the river meets Saginaw Bay, the thumb-side inlet of Lake Huron.

The downtown along Water Street and Washington Avenue keeps its brick and stone commercial blocks, with antique shops, restaurants and the restored State Theatre, whose 1930 Mayan Revival interior is one of the most unusual in Michigan. Across the river, the Midland Street district has its own cluster of pubs and shops, and several bascule bridges link the two sides.

Wenonah Park and the Riverwalk come alive in summer, especially for the Fourth of July fireworks festival, while tall ship sails head out onto the bay. A few miles north, Bay City State Park and Tobico Marsh offer a beach, wetland trails and great birding. Frankenmuth and Midland are short drives away.

Best seasonJune to September for the riverfront, sailing and the July 4 fireworks festival.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the river and the state park.
ArrivingMBS International Airport is about 20 minutes away; I-75 runs along the west side of the city.
