About Bruce Peninsula National Park

Bruce Peninsula National Park lies near the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, where the Niagara Escarpment meets the clear waters of Georgian Bay. White limestone cliffs, rocky beaches, old cedars and orchids create a striking landscape, and the park is part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Its turquoise water and caves draw large summer crowds.

Cyprus Lake is the main access point, with campgrounds and trails leading to the coast. The Grotto, a sea cave with an underwater tunnel, is the most famous sight, reached via the Georgian Bay Trail or the Marr Lake Trail. Further along the shore, Stormhaven and High Dump are remote backcountry campsites. The Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest marked footpath, follows the escarpment to its northern terminus in Tobermory. The Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Tobermory has exhibits and a lookout tower, and nearby Big Tub Harbour holds shipwrecks visible from glass-bottom boats. Flowerpot Island, part of Fathom Five National Marine Park, is known for its sea stacks and is reached by tour boat.

Sturdy shoes matter, since nearly every shoreline here is rock rather than sand. Parking reservations are required for the Grotto area in peak season. Summer is busiest; late spring and early fall offer quieter trails.

Best seasonJuly and August for swimming and boat tours; September brings fewer people and cooler days.
Ideal stayTwo to three days to see the Grotto, Tobermory and Flowerpot Island.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from Toronto; the Chi-Cheemaun ferry links Tobermory with Manitoulin Island.
