About Mississauga

Mississauga is a large city on the shore of Lake Ontario, directly west of Toronto. It grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century from a collection of older villages and farmland, and today it is one of Canada's most populous municipalities. Its communities reflect a highly diverse population, and its waterfront, ravines and historic village cores offer more variety than its suburban reputation suggests.

Port Credit, at the mouth of the Credit River, is the most walkable area, with a marina, lighthouse, restaurants and waterfront parks. Lakefront Promenade Park and Rattray Marsh Conservation Area protect stretches of shoreline, with the marsh's boardwalks offering birdwatching in a quiet setting. In the city center, Celebration Square hosts concerts, festivals and winter skating, overlooked by the curving Absolute World towers. Square One, one of Canada's largest shopping centers, sits next door.

Kariya Park, a Japanese garden, honors Mississauga's sister city relationship, and the Riverwood Conservancy offers trails and gardens along the Credit River. Streetsville retains a village main street with shops and cafés, and historic houses such as Bradley Museum and Benares preserve earlier eras. Mississauga suits visitors combining Toronto sightseeing with a calmer base. Summer and early fall are best for the lakefront.

Best seasonJune through September for the waterfront and festivals; fall colors along the Credit River are lovely too.
Ideal stayOne or two days, often combined with time in Toronto.
ArrivingToronto Pearson International Airport is located within Mississauga, and GO Transit trains connect to Toronto.
