About Muskoka

Muskoka is a region of lakes, rocky shoreline, and pine forest on the Canadian Shield north of Toronto, long known as the province's classic cottage country. Since the late nineteenth century, steamships and later highways carried city families to summer homes on Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph, and boathouses and wooden launches remain part of the scenery.

Gravenhurst is home to the RMS Segwun, a historic steamship that still offers cruises, and Bracebridge has waterfalls right in town at Bracebridge Falls. Bala Falls is another popular stop, while the Port Carling locks let boats move between the larger lakes. Cruises and paddles on Lake Rosseau reveal grand old cottages along the shore. In Huntsville, the Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery places large reproductions of famous paintings on downtown walls, and nearby Arrowhead Provincial Park is known for its hiking and, in winter, a skating trail through the forest. Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve draws stargazers, and Georgian Bay Islands National Park and Algonquin Provincial Park are both within reach.

Muskoka suits travelers who want water, wooded quiet, and small towns. Summer is high season, with crowded roads on weekends, while autumn color is a major attraction. Winter brings snowshoeing and skating. Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Huntsville make convenient bases.

Best seasonJuly and August for lake life; late September and early October for fall color.
Ideal stayThree to five days, ideally with a cottage or resort as a base.
ArrivingMost travelers drive north from Toronto on Highway 400 and Highway 11.
